My queens love to pick on me. I had one lay more than one egg in cells making me think I had a laying worker, yeah yeah I’m a noobie. So my queens laughed at me again. But I did learn a lot from this. Queenright hives do not have laying workers and I learned four different ways of fixing the problem of laying workers also. So it was a win win in…[Read more]
I have land in Rio Rancho West and a home in town. I’d like to offer bee placement in exchange for learning and honey.
Bethany, saw your request to join Certified Beekeepers group. I have to reject it because this is a closed group to students of the program only. I also see you’re looking to put bees out on your property. I would suggest you also post to abqbeeks.org. Some questions you may be asked are:
1. Do you or your neighbors use pesticides?
2. What…[Read more]
Hello everyone! New beekeeper here in Hobbs. I\’m excited to have found this site alive and buzzing andI look forward tto interacting with others here in Southern New Mexico! I currently have two ten frame hives and will be starting a two frame nuc on Friday. Is there anyone in or around Hobbs that would like to chat? Thank you!
How are the nucs coming along?
The two frame nuc is doing well. They love their new queen more than the candy in her cage. 7 days and wouldn’t touch the candy so i ended up doing a direct release yesterday. She tried to fly but went in the box like she owns it. That’s also how she walks on the brood frame. I guess the hive equipment belongs to them not us lol. My bees got very…[Read more]
Good to see the interaction. Kirk, I am going to be in Hobbs sometime within the next week. Probably next weekend and would like to drop in and meet you. Regards, Bob Reneau, VP NMBKA
Feel free to drop by! One hive has good bees and a nice queen. The other three hives……Well they have good bees and the three stooges who like to pick on the beekeeper, me! LOL.
Good to hear that the 2-frame nucs are doing well. I plan to use 3-frame sections in a queen hotel. So a total of 9 frames in a box with 3 separate rooms to create 3 separate queens. I have heard that 3 frames have more bees to control hive beetles and other pests. But a queen hotel could produce one more queen by putting 2 frames in each room. So…[Read more]
Update: I put the bees from the two frame nuc into a new five frame nuc and ordered another five frame nuk after doing a removal for the city. I am up to four hives now! Love these girls!
Hi Kirk- Christina “Honey” Mann in Carlsbad.
Does anyone know where I can get some 5-frame nuc boxes? I found them at Better Bee, but they wanted more in shipping than the cost of the order! Needless to say, with free shipping.
BTW, Walmart has some decent prices on beehives- assembled even! (But for some reason their 5-frame boxes picture a 10-frame)
I get all main equipment form either Dadant And Sons or Barnyard Bees. I have purchased two five frame nuc kits from Barnyard bees and have bees in both and love them! The kit comes with five frame: body, bottom board, inner cover with top entrance, and top outer cover with metal top all good quality with pine wood (metal come with protective…[Read more]
Barnyard bees has what I want- Thanks, Kirk!
